Why We Do It
We believe in taking a proactive, asset-based approach to developing youth and young adults
Every young person is “at risk” in one form or another. Once we remove the stigmas and stereotypes as a community, then we become more willing to collaborate and create an environment where all young people can thrive. At HHC we engage in intentional efforts designed for youth to enhance their interests, skills, and abilities.
Here are the facts:
Of Louisiana’s approximately 4.4 million residents, close to 183,000 adults live with serious mental illness and about 49,000 children live with serious mental health conditions.
Nationally, we lose one life to suicide every 15.8 minutes. Suicide is the eleventh-leading cause of death overall and is the third-leading cause of death among youth and young adults aged 15-24.
Approximately 72 percent of Louisiana students aged 14 and older living with serious mental health conditions who receive special education services drop out of high school.
To deliver progressive mental health, behavioral health, and youth enrichment resources with compassion, integrity, efficiency, and professionalism.
One day every young person will have the resources and support they deserve as they develop mentally, physically, emotionally, and academically into successful adulthood.
As a former educator, I observed first-hand the challenges that we face as a community relative to the development of young people. My experiences inspired and motivated me to build an organization that is truly a resource to youth, parents, and educators.
